SILT

SILT is a research studio for ecological image making run by@annachrystal_and@alisonballance.We’re looking at the material, imaginative and economic processes that go into creating images and colour. Central to the studio are questions around how to make critical work in a time of climate devastation, and how to work as an artist with care responsibilities.SILT asks what a sustainable art practice is and to what extent is it possible ecologically, economically and socially.

The Museum of Bath at Work

Learn how to make cordage using nettle fibres with a sample to take home. You will be shown how to process nettle fibres for hand twisting including : stripping the nettle, drying the fibres and then cord making.

Hand twisting has been used for thousands of years as a method of producing string and yarn, you will see how this can be applied to many different materials. We will discuss ancient fabric construction techniques and their relevance today. You will be shown samples of different yarn made using neolithic processes and you will be able to handle ancient-style tools and look at some of our artwork made at SILT.

The film was excellent, the discussion after was thought provoking, the staff were friendly and helpful, the seats were comfortable!
